As a mother of two teenage drivers (with two more in the wings), I looked for a course that would provide my children with a 'beyond the basics' aspect. With their learner's permit and their provisional licenses, I was happy for them to get driving experience under ideal conditions and usually under a bright sun.
Realistically however, driving independently in snow on steep inclines, black ice, and hydroplaning are realities they will face eventually. So, I wanted them to have knowledge to reach back for instead of a 'Fast and Furious' scene. When I could not find a continuing education driving course which covered these aspects, I decided to put one together myself. In addition to tips for driving in inclement and unfavorable conditions, I thought it would be helpful to include basic auto mechanics "every driver should know" (but often does not).

This free workshop will be 2 hours in length, and will feature 3 different topics and speakers:
Driving in bad weather and snow, highway driving including how to tackle short on-ramps, importance distance and speed, etc.
As our young drivers will, hopefully, have limited interaction with the police, I thought to include them in the workshop to give perspective on how law enforcement sees drivers' common mistakes and poor judgement calls, proper procedure when you are pulled over by a police officer, as well as how to respond when being first on scene at a serious automobile accident, or what to do when you yourself are involved in one. Approaching Emergency vehicle protocol.
Topics will include oil changes, coolant, battery care, tire pressure, jump starting, anchor points for the jack, tire changing, familiarity with what is under the hood. Bringing your own car is encouraged.
The event took place at the Ridgefield Driving School at 37 Danbury Road for the first two topics and then continued at Pamby Motors at 143 Danbury Road for the hands-on mechanical part.
